Is What You're Drinking Packing On The Pounds? I Started Drinking Fortune Delight...
Is What We're Drinking Packing On The Pounds?
It’s not too much of a surprise that drinking too much soda pop, energy drinks, or other sugary drinks can be bad for you. But how bad is it really? Can it contribute to weight gain?
I didn’t have a clue for a long time. I would drink a soda with lunch and another with dinner pretty much everyday. And if I was eating out, that usually meant more then one soda because of a little something called "free refills".
Well that changed a couple years ago when I realized I had slowly gained 15 pounds without even realizing it. I went on a learning journey and was shocked at how much weight sugary drinks can put on you.
Here are 3 reports I read that shocked me.
1. Researches show that one extra soft drink a day gave a child a 60 percent greater chance of becoming obese. "Consumption of sugar [high fructose corn syrup]-sweetened drinks," they concluded, "is associated with obesity in children."
2. Twenty-one percent of the sugar in the American diet comes from soft drinks. That’s more than just an unhealthy consumption of empty calories. It is a dangerous overload of caffeine and potentially hazardous, nutrient-depleting additives.
3. A study of more than 50,000 U.S. nurses found that those who drank just one serving of soda or fruit punch a day tended to gain much more weight than those who drank less than one a month, and had more than an 80 percent increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the disease. The risk pertained to drinks sweetened with either sugar or high-fructose corn syrup.
The message is: Anyone who cares about their health or the health of their family would not consume these beverages," said Walter C. Willett of the Harvard School of Public Health, who helped conduct the study. "Parents who care about their children’s health should not keep them at home."
I’ve decided not to keep soda pop and other sugary drinks in my home anymore. Here's what I drink instead.
